The Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority, under the Ministry of Science and Technology, is the national standardization body. In performing its duties and functions, PSQCA is governed by the PSQCA Act, 1996. PSQCA came into operation since 1st December 2000, working with 81 scientists/engineers and 254 supporting staff as self-finance organization, been given the task of not only formulation of Pakistan Standards, but is also responsible for promulgation thereof. PSQCA is a member of International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electro-technical Commission (IEC), and International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML). PSQCA has also been established to advise the Government on standardization policies, programmes and activities to promote industrial efficiency and development, as well as for consumer protection.
The main function of the Department is to foster and promote standards and conformity assessment as a means of advancing the national economy, promoting industrial efficiency and development, ensuring the health and safety of the public, protecting the consumers, facilitating domestic and international trade and furthering international co-operation in relation to standards and conformity assessment.

The Federal Minister for Science & Technolgy Mr. Zahid Hamid says that action would be taken against Sub-Standard Manufacturers/Products as per PSQCA Section-14 of PSQCA Act-VI of 1996. The Honorable Federal Minister alongwith Federal Secretary visited PSQCA Head Office, Karachi where he was briefed by the Director General Mr. Pir Bakhsh Jamali alongwith his team regarding the activities carried out by PSQCA. The Honorable Minister showed his concern regarding increasing contamination resulting into public complaints regarding bottled drinking water. He directed; to make sure the quality of bottled drinking water. He further directed to Director General of PSQCA to improve coordination for infra-structure of quality control system at Inter-provincial level to enhance the performance of the authority. He added; the suppliers, contractors and associations incorporated to the developed institutions of the Pakistan are motivated to make use of standardized indigenous articles approved by the PSQCA. Therefore it was decided and directed by the Honorable
Minister to invoke the relevant articles as envisaged under PSQCA Act-VI of 1996 which can result upto one year sentence alongwith Rs.100,000/= fine or both for persons/companies involved in such trade. The Honorable Minister also emphasized regarding Halal Pakistan Standards and Certification of Products which has a huge potential for international market. The Director General PSQCA updated the Hon'ble Minister that the PSQCA has formulated three forms/types of Pakistani Standards on Halal.
